Nystagmus

Nystagmus

Nystagmus is a constant oscillatory eye movement that has several possible causes. The most common types of Nystagmus in children are ‘infantile nystagmus syndrome’ (also known as congenital nystagmus) and ‘fusion maldevelopment nystagmus syndrome’ (also known as latent nystagmus). The former is commonly idiopathic (i.e. no known underlying cause found) or associated with other vision problems e.g. albinism, cataract. The latter is always associated with an early onset squint. Nystagmus invariably causes a reduction in vision, often below the legal limits for driving, but to date there is little evidence in adults for proven treatments, let alone infants and children.
